Inscriptions commemorating an individual or individuals who have passed away, found typically on a gravestone, tomb, or memorial marker. These inscriptions often include the name of the deceased, and may also contain additional details about the deceased such as age, origin, occupation and life achievements, but also information about their relatives, or commissioners of the inscription / grave. Some inscriptions may contain verse epigrams, quotes or tributes to the departed. Funerary inscriptions serve as a means of honoring and remembering the deceased and are a common feature in burial sites and memorial spaces across various cultures and time periods. The language of funerary inscriptions is often formulaic, with repetitive phrases such as the invocation of the underworld deities 'Dis Manibus', or well wishes to the deceased.
