A dactylic colon is defined as a rhythmic unit corresponding to a part of a dactylic verse (hexameter/pentameter) delimited by one of the caesuras into which the verse is divided. These caesuras serve as the 'suture points' of the cola (see the entry on 'caesuras'). For the hexameter, the system of caesuras that delimit the cola was identified by Fränkel (1926; 1960): – ⏑⏑ | – | ⏑⏑ – | ⏑|⏑ – | ⏑ ⏑ | – ⏑⏑ – ⏓ The pentameter is divided into two cola separated by the central caesura (see Martinelli 1995, 287): - ⏑⏑ - ⏑⏑ - | - ⏑⏑ - ⏑⏑
